The playmaker was a key member of the Stoke City side for four years, winning the player of the year title in 2021 and being much missed during a string of lengthy spells in the treatment room.

He was dismissed at the end of last season as part of Alex Neil‘s major rebuild and finished with 83 league starts, 28 cameos, and 27 goals. The 63 games he missed may have contributed to Stoke falling short of expectations over that period, with a best result of 14th as two promising seasons faded.

I had a successful time at Stoke,” he told SkyBet via StokeonTrentLive. “I can’t say anything bad about it; I had a good time there.” I’m close to it because I live nearby; personally, I had a successful time there based on statistics.

“I really enjoyed my time there; many of the people who were there at the time became good friends, and the staff were very nice to me.” The most difficult thing for me was that my last year was plagued by injuries – yet I liked my time there.”

Powell‘s next stop after Stoke was unexpected. After being linked with Wrexham – and a reunion with James McClean and Steven Fletcher – and receiving interest from other Championship clubs, he signed for Stockport County.

Stockport have already won five games in a row in League Two and are climbing the ladder, but Powell has missed the last three after suffering an injury in a 2-1 victory over MK Dons, shortly after scoring his first goal for the club.
