Despite spending £25 million, Phil Hay revelation essentially reveals Leeds United player won’t play for club again – View

Brenden Aaronson was acquired by Leeds United for £25 million from Red Bull Salzburg in 2022, however his season-long loan to Union Berlin has practically ended his tenure with the team.

Given the huge number of loan players that left, it’s challenging to keep track of who Leeds currently has on their books.

Brenden Aaronson, whose Union Berlin team has lost its first two Champions League games, is suffering. Some are performing much better than others.

What kind of a player is Brenden Aaronson?

Aaronson is currently playing in the Bundesliga with a lot of energy, as we witnessed from his time at Leeds, but there hasn’t been much substance to it.

The two underdogs fought it out in a Champions League match during the middle of the week at the contentious Olympiastadion (home of Hertha Berlin), where the away team snatched victory in extra time.

Aaronson, who came on as a substitute, had an opportunity to seal the victory when he connected with a cross from six yards out but headed wide with the goal wide open.

Will he return to Leeds?

Phil Hay of The Athletic has revealed that his loan move to the German club is not being used to rebuild his ability to hopefully integrate him back into the Leeds squad in 24/25.

Instead, the strategy remains the same as when they paid £25 million for him in 2022, with the goal of increasing his value to the point where they can make a big profit:

“There is little value for Leeds in the status quo continuing there because Aaronson was one of the players they wanted to aid them financially further down the line; that irrespective of whether he ever returned to play for United again, a good year abroad would enhance his value and avoid the scenario the club faced in the last window where any permanent transfer would have resulted in a loss on the fee they paid to RB Salzburg for Aaronson in 2022.”

Not many fans would have welcomed Aaronson‘s homecoming before Hay‘s revelation, but it makes even more sense not to see him set foot in

knowing he is one of the players the club hopes to get a good return on.

His current form suggests that Leeds‘ money was not spent properly, but at 22 and still adjusting to life in the Premier League, there’s a chance he can string together enough performances and grow enough to be worth the gamble.

Breaking even would be a result at this point.
