Alejo Veliz, an interesting summer acquisition costing £13 million from Argentina, has Spurs fans wondering how he might fit into Ange’s plans.
Veliz, who was only 19 at the time the season began, was portrayed as a promising young player with a bright future.
The teenage striker’s skill was untested in England, after scoring 11 goals in 23 appearances in the Primera Division, and with new acquisition Manor Solomon providing Sonny the option to play down the middle of the park, first-team prospects appeared small.
Now, however, a genuine opportunity to play is still possible.
Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon‘s injuries have reduced Spurs‘ offensive options, despite the addition of Brennan Johnson before the end of August. Richarlison, the alternate candidate for the ninth position, has also continued to perform poorly.
Veliz might eventually start to receive more minutes as there are less players to choose from.
Although he made his senior squad debut against Arsenal, he never saw action on the pitch. Veliz also participated in the games against Liverpool and Luton, albeit just for a brief period in each.
Despite his lack of actual participation, the current trend in squad selection appears to suggest that he’ll soon be playing more minutes.
It’s difficult to determine how much the player has genuinely improved during his time with the team; perhaps Ange or Veliz himself might witness to that. He is now simply receiving touches on the ball while practising.
Since the athlete has a six-year contract with the club and will have plenty of time to adjust to playing at such a high level, Ange has adopted a wise strategy in gradually integrating the player.
However, Veliz appears to be moving closer and closer to the field due to injuries and subpar performances from several players, temporarily halting Ange’s slow-development plans.
