Brighton & Hove City Council has approved plans to build a new stadium in the city for Brighton Women.

Albion’s ladies have been playing in the WSL since 2018, but they are currently based at Crawley Town’s Broadfield Stadium.

The club’s desire has long been to play their home matches in the city, and that appears to be getting closer after a motion was voted at a full council meeting last week committing their support.

The actual size, capacity, and location of the new stadium have still to be determined, although Albion Women hosted Tottenham in the WSL at the Amex Stadium last week, drawing a crowd of over 7,000 – a record for a women’s match.

“The team have been playing in the top-flight Women’s Super League since 2018 and have established themselves,” stated Cllr. John Hewitt. It is critical that the team relocate to the city so that the infrastructure is in place for them to prosper.

“A purpose-built stadium for our team will increase attendance, encourage participation, and allow the team to follow in the footsteps of the men’s team.” Consider having two European tours in the same season. This would be an excellent asset to our city.”

“We believe that this is another positive step in the right direction for women’s football within the Sussex community,” said Zoe Johnson, Brighton‘s managing director of women’s and girls’ football. We recognise that it will take time, and we look forward to collaborating with the municipality to bring the women’s team to Brighton on a permanent basis.”

Cllr Kerry Pickett of the Green Party, a lifetime Albion supporter, stated, “I want to see Brighton & Hove Albion’s women’s team play to a packed stadium in their home town.” The Albion WSL players are an inspiration to these young females, and I feel that this level of support can and will expand, as will interest.

“Indeed, the club’s amazing foundation recently celebrated a 100 per cent increase in attendance at its football sessions for girls in the last 12 months alone.”
