Leeds United have made little progress in re-signing a ‘great’ player- Phil Hay.

Leeds United have yet to make any headway in negotiations for a new deal for Wilfried Gnonto.

According to Phil Hay of the Athletic, the likelihood of a deal has ‘not gotten off the ground yet,’ despite suggestions from Italy that Gnonto wants to depart.

Following his relegation, Gnonto attempted to push his way out of Leeds in the summer by refusing to play and then submitting a transfer request just hours before a match against West Brom.

Gnonto then apologised to both Angus Kinnear and Daniel Farke before being restored into the fold, but minutes have been difficult to come by as of late due to his injury and the form of others.

This has prompted the Italian media to speculate that Gnonto is’ready to say farewell’ to Leeds in January, though the 20-year-old has dismissed those allegations on Instagram this week.

According to Hay, Leeds has yet to make headway on the Gnonto deal.
According to Hay, there was a ‘quiet optimism’ at Leeds that Gnonto would sign a new contract to’smooth the waters’ after his summer trauma.

However, it would not put Leeds in a poor position in January because Gnonto would still have three and a half years left on his present deal, allowing them to establish a similar asking price to that of the summer.

Willy Gnonto

Leeds did everything they could to keep Gnonto despite Everton‘s interest, with his form in the Premier League last season indicating he has the ability to shred up the Championship.

Don Goodman praised Gnonto, Georginio Rutter, and Joel Piroe as ‘outstanding’ and ‘too excellent for the Championship’ on Sky Sports News on September 26 (10.42am).

Leeds will be hopeful that Gnonto can demonstrate that in the coming weeks and months, as well as making progress on potentially signing a new contract.
