Alexis MacAllister is still finding his feet at Liverpool, but there’s no doubt that he’ll be a fantastic signing.
The 24-year-old has had a rough patch recently, culminating in a poor performance for Argentina last night. But, with Liverpool doing so well this season, he’s been an important part of Jurgen Klopp‘s team.
It follows an excellent year with Brighton and Argentina, which seemed to make a move higher up the football food chain inevitable. Liverpool had him marked as a top target from the start of the transfer window.
Brighton chief executive Paul Barber admitted to journalist Ben Jacobs via X yesterday that ‘everyone could see’ that Mac Allister was ready to leave the Seagulls.
“Everyone could see that Alexis Mac Allister, having won a World Cup, would want to play at the highest possible level that he could,” Barber said.
Mac Allister is prepared for the Reds’ journey.
Some at Liverpool have begun to question Mac Allister after a couple of slightly below-par performances. But that’s too harsh for us.
True, we could have hoped for a little more from a player who already has a World Cup winner’s medal on his mantle. On occasion, the Argentine has disappointed.
However, it’s worth noting that, until last Sunday’s game, Mac Allister had been a regular starter for Liverpool in the Premier League.
The Reds haven’t had a perfect season, but they’ve been 100 times better than last year.
Mac Allister deserves credit for his role in this as a new player making a big step up and entering a brand-new environment.
Dominik Szoboszlai has drawn more attention, but the former Brighton man has kept things moving while also providing the occasional sliver of magic.
Mac Allister will only improve as he becomes more accustomed to playing for a top club. We should see him released from the shackles of his holding midfield role at some point, which should also help.
According to Barber, it was clear that Macca was ready to take that step up. It’s a process, but he hasn’t seemed out of place so far.
Alexis, keep going; you’ll get there.
