Joe Rodon of Wales and Leeds United was inconsolable yesterday night as he paid tribute to his friend Charlie Batcup, who unfortunately died at the age of 30.
Batcup was described as the “heartbeat” of his club’s community, and Pontlliw FC, near Swansea, said it was “heartbroken and devastated” to learn of the death of its “player, club man, and dear friend” on Sunday. Charlie passed away in Amsterdam.
That remark came the day after Rodon, who plays for Tottenham but is presently on loan at Elland Road, represented Wales in a key Euro 2024 qualifier against Armenia on Saturday night, wearing a shirt honouring Charlie. Following the 1-1 tie with Turkey on Tuesday night, a visibly sad Rodon seemed inconsolable as he removed his Wales jersey to reveal another shirt underneath that read: “RIP Charlie Batcup.”
Rodon, 26, was raised in Llangyfelach, Swansea, and played for the Swans before moving to north London in 2020. He was consoled by captain Ben Davies and Leeds teammate Ethan Ampadu after the game’s final whistle — a moment that signalled the end of Wales’ hopes of qualifying for the Euros automatically, but they do have the play-off route in March.
