Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed a new Leeds United stance in their compensation dispute with Premier League club Everton.
Following Everton‘s violation of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, the Whites intend to sue the Toffees for £300 million [Daily Mail, 17 November].
Jacob told GIVEMESPORT (28 November), Southampton and Nottingham Forest may also have claims against Everton.
“It’s a complicated subplot of the main Everton case, whereby five clubs, including Leeds, have stated that they wish to take collective action against Everton to the tune of £300m,” according to GIVEMESPORT. “Now that the ruling has been issued, even though we must respect Everton’s appeal, those clubs must effectively decide whether or not to proceed.”
“At the moment, it appears that Leeds, Burnley, and Leicester, three of the five clubs, intend to pursue collective action for compensation.” It is unclear whether Southampton and Nottingham Forest will also join.
“In effect, they argue that Everton benefited by remaining in the Premier League.” We know that Leeds went down with Leicester and Burnley, the other clubs determined to continue, and that it will continue for more than one season because Everton’s survival in one season came at the expense of Burnley.
“They’re still in the Premier League, and they stayed up last season at the expense of Leicester.” And, of course, Leeds fell as well.”
A difficult problem
The decision regarding Everton and their guilty verdict in terms of financial fair play is certainly complicated, and that story has a long way to go before it is concluded.
This is primarily due to the Merseyside club’s decision to appeal the decision, with the Toffees frustrated by the immediate sanction, which saw them drop from 14th to 19th in the Premier League table.
It remains to be seen what will happen with Leeds and their compensation issue, but for the time being, manager Daniel Farke must simply focus on matters on the pitch.
The man in charge at Elland Road has done an excellent job thus far, and he would be foolish to let the Everton situation get in the way of that.
The Whites’ players and fans must also remain focused on the main goal in West Yorkshire, which is to return to the top flight at the first attempt.
