Leeds United’s U21 side beat Colchester United late in the Premier League Cup on Monday night, but Darko Gyabi was missing – and that could be a sign he’ll play tonight.

After trailing Colchester for much of the second half, Joe Snowdon scored in the 96th minute to seal the victory. However, a red card on 74 minutes, with Colchester leading 1-0, provided the impetus for the Whites to turn things around.

Leeds’ Diogo Monteiro equalised before Snowdon scored late on. A fantastic victory, almost securing a place in the next round. After four games, we have nine points and trail Chelsea on goal difference.

However, the absence of £5 million man Gyabi was also noticeable on Monday night. This season, the midfielder has only appeared twice for the first team, but he has been a regular for the under-21s when available and fit.

Darko Gyabi

Gyabi had appeared in all three Premier League Cup games prior to Monday, so his absence from the starting lineup came as a surprise. Gyabi could be suffering from a knock or an injury right now.

Darko Gyabi could play against Sunderland, according to Leeds.

He did, however, play 90 minutes for the 21s last Thursday in their home loss to Sparta Prague. So it would be surprising if he did have an injury, especially since Farke did not mention it during Monday’s press conference.

Darko Gyabi

With Sam Byram, Jamie Shackleton, Stuart Dallas, Junior Firpo, and possibly Patrick Bamford all out against Sunderland on Tuesday night, Farke may decide to give Gyabi a first-team call-up.

In the summer, he turned down Valenciennes and Fleetwood. Gyabi would be only his sixth appearance in the Championship this season, and his first since the draw with Sheffield Wednesday on September 2.
