Matt Jarvis lauded Destiny Udogie after the Tottenham Hotspur left-back came to the team’s rescue in the early stages of the second half against Bournemouth on Sunday.
It was astonishing that the game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium stayed 1-0 for so long after Pape Matar Sarr’s ninth-minute goal. Dominic Solanke and Richarlison wasted excellent chances for either side.
While the Spurs lacked quality at times, one player who stood out was Destiny Udogie.
Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie is amazing.
Udogie has been a revelation this season, showing to be one of the Premier League’s greatest left-backs. It’s hard to believe he hadn’t made his debut in the competition before to the start of the season.
Andoni Iraola, manager of the Cherries, commended Udogie before of the encounter, citing his performance on the south coast earlier in the season.
And, speaking on BBC Radio Five Live (31 December; 15:11), Matt Jarvis expressed his admiration for the Italian’s performance.
“Yeah, great defending by Udogie once again.” He’s kept the Spurs in this game several times by using his power and pace to get back into position and assist a teammate. He’s been a standout for them today,” he remarked.
“He’s been fantastic today, he really has.” He’s done so great on defense. “He’s been outstanding in that backline with his athleticism, strength, and positioning,” he continued.
Spurs earn yet another significant victory.
Tottenham certainly rode their luck on Sunday afternoon. Solanke, in particular, could have had a hat-trick on another day.
But that is how Ange Postecoglou’s team plays. They do take chances. They also rely heavily on last-ditch defense.
Udogie is simply great at that.
He is proving to be a superb purchase for Tottenham. And Spurs gained such a vital win in their effort to get their prospective title drive back on track.
