A large cash offer might compel Leeds United to sell Archie Grey: Carlton Palmer

If the Whites themselves are promoted, Carlton Palmer has stated that he thinks a lucrative offer from a Premier League club might force Leeds United to sell Archie Grey.

The 17-year-old midfielder has been good so far this season at Elland Road, where he has participated in each of Daniel Farke‘s team’s 10 games across all competitions, according to a story in The Sun on Sunday, September 24, that Crystal Palace was keeping an eye on him.

Grey has drawn a lot of attention and is tremendously well-regarded at Elland Road despite only making his first team debut at the beginning of the season and being so young. However, according to former Leeds midfielder Palmer, the Whites might not be able to turn down a sizable offer in January.

He stated, “I think Leeds will get promoted this season, I really believe that, I said it at the start of the season,” in an interview with Football League World on Tuesday, September 26. If they do receive promotion and a lucrative offer, Leeds might feel pressured to act.

It’s crucial for a young player to obtain playing time, and at such a young age, he’s doing both by playing for Leeds United. It would be best to remain where you are because he is unlikely to join a Premier League team and play every week.

He would probably be loaned back to a Championship club even if he signed with a Premier League team in January. So perhaps that would be a deal that Leeds would look to make if they did decide to sell.

Stay where you are

The greatest thing for Gray‘s career, as Palmer previously stated, is to play games frequently. However, at the age of 17, there won’t be many clubs where Grey will be a regular starter, certainly not in the Premier League given the financial strength of all 20 clubs.

In spite of the fact that Grey sat on the bench for the first time this year during Saturday’s [23 September] 3-0 victory against Watford, Farke was more likely acknowledging Gray’s youth and using the opportunity to rest and rotate players rather than criticising Gray‘s performances.

Gray‘s influence may be slightly diminished now that Glean Kamara and Ilia Gruev are part of Yorkshire’s squad, but given the Championship’s rigorous fixture schedule, the 17-year-old will still play considerably more games than he would with any Premier League club.

If Leeds is also promoted, the midfielder will be able to make the transition to playing in the top division with a team that he is already familiar with, rather than having to leave his childhood team and suddenly move up a tier of the football pyramid.

Given that his contract at Elland Road runs until 2025 and the Whites are already eager to prolong his stay, Leeds United shouldn’t want to lose one of their brightest prospects, and it is unlikely that they’d let any fee force their hand [Phil Hay, 9 August].
