Abdoulaye Doucoure reveals the referee’s apology following Everton’s ‘awful’ decisions against Brighton.

Abdoulaye Doucoure was speaking after Everton’s 1-1 draw with Brighton at Goodison Park in the Premier League.

Abdoulaye Doucoure believes his Everton team was subjected to some ‘awful’ decisions against Brighton & Hove Albion and has announced that he will not compete in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

With a share of the spoils against the Seagulls on Saturday afternoon, the Blues extended their unbeaten run to three games in all competitions. Vitalii Mykolenko‘s first-half opener was cancelled out by Ashley Young‘s late own goal.

After the game, Blues manager Sean Dyche claimed that his team should have been awarded a penalty when Dominic Calvert-Lewin went down inside the box under a challenge from Jan Paul van Hecke.

Doucoure was enraged by another incident midway through the first half. Calvert-Lewin was hacked down on the edge of the box by Lewis Dunk, but instead of allowing play to continue with Doucoure through on goal, referee Tim Robinson blew for the foul and awarded a free-kick, which was smashed over by James Garner.

Doucoure, on the other hand, was dissatisfied with the call and revealed that referee Robinson apologized to him after awarding the foul, admitting that he had been too quick to blow his whistle.

When asked about some of Robinson’s calls, he said, “I think the first one in the first half, when Dominic went down, I was alone, to be honest, and the referee just blows the whistle.”

“I’m not sure why, because I was alone, and to be honest, it was a huge risk.” I believe some terrible decision (sic) will be made someday.”

When asked if the referee had spoken to him about the decision, he replied, “He apologised after it.” He said I blew the whistle too soon, but we’re fighting this afternoon; we had some good chances to win the game, but we gave up that goal that killed us at the end.”

Doucoure extended his stay at Everton until the end of June 2025 by signing a new contract on Friday. In yet another timely boost for Sean Dyche, the midfielder has announced his decision not to represent Mali at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

When asked if he had decided whether or not he would play in the tournament, Doucoure said, “No, at the moment, I don’t think I’m going to make the Africa Nations Cup, to be honest.”

“I think I’ll stay here in an Everton shirt.” I’m not interested in going. It’s not a big deal because I only played for the Mali national team once.

“I want to concentrate entirely on my career and the club.” I love my country, but I’m staying.”

“I’ve been in tough times, to be honest,” he said before signing his new contract. It was difficult for me, but I never gave up.

“No one can break me. I’m still here, fighting for the club. I’m overjoyed with my new contract. The new manager arrived and rehired me. Everyone in the club adores me.

“Throughout my career, I was always playing. I only had this issue with the previous manager, who was not working. I’m still here, still happy, still alive, and still looking for more.
