Despite Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-1 loss to Chelsea, Jamie Carragher praises goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Tottenham Hotspur were defeated 4-1 at home by Chelsea last night, their first Premier League defeat of 2023-24.
Spurs were reduced to ten men after Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were sent off, but they managed to hold on for a point until Nicolas Jackson scored a hat-trick in the final 15 minutes of the London derby.
Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario‘s brilliant saves kept his team in the game for as long as possible, and Jamie Carragher was blown away by the Italian’s performance.
“I must say, the custodian was absolutely sensational,” the ex-Liverpool player said on Sky Sports.
“You mention the sweeper keeper. I’ve never seen anything like it, and he’s been a total revelation since joining Tottenham.”
Tottenham’s star had 53 touches, completed 25 passes, five clearances, four long balls, and five saves, including two from point-blank range inside his box.
Vicario has the highest save ratio (77.8%) in the Premier League so far this season, and he is ideal for Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou‘s playing style.
The 27-year-old arrived from Empoli in the summer and has proven to be the ideal successor to Hugo Lloris.
Vicario has four clean sheets, 18 sweeper clearances, and 37 saves in 11 games so far, but he couldn’t stop Chelsea from running riot in the final 15 minutes last night due to Spurs’ high defensive line.
Tottenham remain second in the table and will be desperate to bounce back when they return to action on Saturday against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium in the final game before the international break.
They return to action after the break on November 26 at home against Aston Villa, and Vicario is looking forward to both games and others.
