According to Alasdair Gold, Simon Davies has declined the opportunity to become Wales’ assistant coach in preference of continuing his current post as Tottenham’s academy director

Davies joined Tottenham as the Under-21s’ head of methodology two years ago before being moved to academy director when Dean Rastrick quit the position last year.

Davies has vast coaching experience, having started with Chester City before becoming assistant manager of Manchester City’s Under-21s in 2013.

He rose through the ranks at Manchester City, finally becoming the club’s head of academy coaching in 2018. He then moved on to work as Vincent Kompany’s assistant at Anderlecht before moving to north London.

Gold has now disclosed that the 50-year-old received a call from Craig Bellamy, the new Wales manager, offering him the position as assistant coach.

Bellamy replaces Rob Page, the Wales manager who was fired last month for refusing to continue under new manager Scott Parker at Burnley.

The reporter clarified, though, that Davies has chosen not to accept the position and will stay on at Tottenham for the time being.

This is wonderful news for Tottenham, since the academy’s recruiting and player development have been exceptional under Davies, with the current crop of Under-18s and Under-21s perhaps the most talented the club has seen in a long time.
