Amid rumours of Glen Kamara’s departure, Graham Smyth has instructed Leeds United to think about selling the player for a price as high as £10 million this summer.
The Finnish midfielder, who cost £5 million to join Daniel Farke’s squad from Rangers [YEP, 8 July], apparently reached a personal agreement with Stade Rennais even though the Whites were hesitant to let him go [Adam Pope, 5 July].
While no agreement appears to be close between the two clubs, Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Smyth has suggested that Leeds would only approve a potential trade if they received an eight-figure amount.
On Monday (8 July), he wrote in the Yorkshire Evening Post: “So long as Rennes do not offer to at least double the money that Leeds spent to bring the ex-Rangers man to Elland Road, surely the only question for the transfer chiefs is why?
Leeds United can’t afford to lose another midfield player until a sizable offer is made; they have already suffered a serious blow this summer with the early departure of Archie Gray to Tottenham.
Kamara may not be as thrilling as the youth or even Ilia Gruev, but he has been essential to Farke’s debut season at Elland Road. If the Whites are to secure promotion next season, they will almost definitely rely on him again.
That being said, no player is completely off limits in the Championship, and if Stade Rennais were to offer a large amount for his services, which could be utilised to recruit a replacement, a deal could be reached.
It remains to be seen whether the French side will be willing to pay such a fee, but it appears that they will have to splash the cash if they want to persuade Leeds’ transfer chiefs to sell this summer.
