Agbonlahor exclaims, “I love him,” but believes the Liverpool player “shouldn’t actually be starting.”

Although he thinks highly of Liverpool’s James Milner, Gabriel Agbonlahor recently told TalkSPORT that the Reds should consider a successor.

Last night, Milner entered the game as Liverpool defeated Ajax 2-1 at Anfield to breathe new life into their season.

Fabinho, Thiago, and Harvey Elliott all started for Liverpool last night, it was discussed on the show this morning that the midfield was more prominent.

The Reds were humiliated by Napoli last week when they defeated them 4-1 in Naples, with Milner making an unexpected start.

Although Milner has a lot of fans, according to Agbonlahor, Jurgen Klopp shouldn’t be starting him in midfield right now.

He stated, “I love him, I truly love James Milner,” to TalkSPORT (14/09; 08:13). But in a Champions League match, he shouldn’t really be starting for Liverpool in that midfield at his current age.

Milner is an excellent employee. He has spent the entirety of his playing career in the Premier League and is still in top physical condition.

He has already made nine appearances in 2022–23 at the age of 36, contributing an assist in an August matchup with Crystal Palace.

With almost 600 Premier League appearances under his belt, Milner is still a respectable utility player for Klopp.

It goes without saying that Liverpool will need to have a plan in place for a Milner replacement.

Liverpool can’t keep hanging their hat on a 36-year-old given their ambition, even though he’s not now the first pick.

Yes, Agbonlahor is correct. Milner won’t be around for much longer, and the team probably has targets in mind for the middle.

Due to Liverpool’s thorough approach to acquisitions, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Reds sign an outstanding midfielder during the summer transfer window.

In a little under a year, Milner’s current term will come to an end, and it is likely that he will leave Anfield.
