The Tottenham Hotspur manager has spoken about some of his new young players who have made an immediate effect at the club.
Ange Postecoglou has revealed why Guglielmo Vicario and Destiny Udogie made such an impression on him before making an impact for Tottenham this season.
Both players have fit well into the Australian system and have received praise for their performances in the Premier League thus far. Hugo Lloris expressed his intention to seek a new challenge, which he has yet to discover, and Vicario has become Tottenham’s first new main keeper in 11 years.
Postecoglou stated that when the club’s recruitment department provided him with potential Lloris successors that matched his system, the 26-year-old Vicario jumped out.
“It was probably the priority position when I came in because at the time it looked like Hugo was moving on and there was a need for a new starting custodian,” he stated. “You’re given some options, and I just really liked Vic from the start in terms of the qualities he possesses as a custodian – his agility, demeanour, and character.”
“Then I spoke with him, and he has such a contagious personality.” He was very focused. He was adamant about coming to Tottenham and proving himself at the next level. Looking back at his career, he hasn’t spent much time at the highest level, similar to Micky van de Ven and a few others.
“I like players who have quickly risen from a low level because it shows that they adapt quickly but also that they’re coachable, that they learn, and you look at Vic, and he’s taken big steps very, very quickly and he’s been absolutely outstanding for us in the first six or seven games.”
“He’s been a really strong influence on the pitch in the big moments when we’ve needed him and he comes in every day and wants to improve, and that’s exactly what we need.”
