Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that the club will enter the January transfer window in search of a new centre back.
Spurs were dealt a major blow last month when Micky van de Ven was injured. He is expected to be out for some time, and the Spurs will need to replace him with another top-tier defender.
Spurs manager, as relayed by Fabrizio Romano, said ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on Friday night: “We need to sign another centre-back though because at the moment we’re on tenterhooks in case something else happens there.”
Should the Spurs pursue Ben Godfrey?
Tottenham are preparing to step up their pursuit of Ben Godfrey in the January transfer window, according to 90min.
Godfrey has struggled to find regular playing time at Everton under Sean Dyche, and he could be allowed to leave on loan or on a permanent basis.
Spurs have looked shaky at the back since Van de Ven’s injury, and they have lost three Premier League games. Spurs sold Davinson Sanchez to Turkish champions Galatasaray in the summer and are now looking for someone who would fit better in Postecoglou’s system.
Spurs scouts are said to be impressed with Godfrey, who has fallen down the pecking order at Goodison Park. He must play regularly in order to be considered for a return to the England national team.
Tottenham have long admired Godfrey’s club teammate Jarrad Branthwaite, but Everton will not sell their prized asset in January.
