Archie Gray, a teenage player, joined Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month from Leeds United and he has definitely made an immediate impression.
The 18-year-old Gray made 52 games for Leeds in the previous season, demonstrating that he has the experience necessary to succeed at Spurs right immediately.
It will certainly take some time for Gray to acclimate, even though he is obviously making a significant improvement, but Ange Postecoglou seems fairly impressed with the young youngster.
Postecoglou has started Gray in each of Tottenham’s first three preseason games. It may surprise you in and of itself, but what has surprised us even more is that Gray has spent all of his early playing time at center defense.
Despite Gray’s frequent usage as a right-back, the midfielder did not appear in any central defense games for Leeds during the previous campaign. However, it appears like Postecoglou is making every effort to improve Gray’s defensive skills in order to better position him for the upcoming campaign.
Archie Gray is expected to return to the midfield against the K-League XI by Ange Postecoglou.
For football.london on Tuesday, journalist Alasdair Gold witnessed the Spurs’ most recent preseason training session.
Early in the training, Postecoglou had his team play an 11 against 11 match and ran through a number of drills. Most importantly, though, was Gray’s position—he played middle the whole session. The 18-year-old showed no hesitation in playing defense during the game or the ensuing drills, indicating that Postecoglou’s center-back experiment may be coming to an end for the time being.
It’s interesting to note that Jamie Doney, another rookie, stuck with his left-back position. Gold mentioned that Mile Jedinak gave him a lot of coaching advice while they were playing 11 against 11.
One Tottenham player in particular has amazed Gray at practice lately; it’s obvious that he’s enjoying himself immensely. Gray and Lucas Bergvall in the midfield may also be a pleasure for Tottenham supporters on Wednesday in the friendly against a K-League XI.
Spanish sources have reacted to Bergvall’s Tottenham debut in light of the fact that he declined a deal to Barcelona in favor of relocating to north London.
