BARNSLEY have turned down a £2.5 million proposal from Coventry City for defender Liam Kitching, but the Championship club is still interested.

BARNSLEY have reportedly put down a £2.5 million deal from Coventry City for star defender and captain Liam Kitching.

The former Leeds United and Harrogate Town midfielder has won many fans with his efforts for the Oakwell club this season, and the Sky Blues are said to have been watching him for some time.

The Sky Blues, who received around £20 million earlier this summer following the sale of Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting Lisbon, have gone on a close-season spending spree that has included a club-record signing in £7.7 million forward Haji Wright, Everton striker Ellis Simms for £3.5 million, and Dutch defender Milan van Ewijk for £3.4 million, among others.

They have also signed Reds goalie Brad Collins and ex-Oakwell loanee Bobby Thomas on a permanent basis for £2 million from Burnley, bringing their total outlay to just under £20 million.Kitching, 23, was one of League One’s top defenders last season and can play left-back or center-half.

Despite the fact that the bid was rejected, with the sum rising to £3m with add-ons, Coventry are expected to keep their interest, with the player thought to be eager to play at a higher level.Kitching, who signed a new contract with Barnsley last December until 2026 with a club option for another year, remains in a strong position.
