Ben Godfrey had previously sought assistance from Leeds United boss Daniel Farke.
Ben Godfrey, a reported Leeds United target, has already explained a key piece of advice he received from Daniel Farke earlier in his career. Godfrey has been linked with a transfer to Leeds as Farke seeks to add depth to his backline, which may require more cover at both centre-back and fullback.
Godfrey is a centre-back by trade, but he could play as a full-back, and Farke knows what to anticipate from the Everton star after previously working with him at Norwich City. Godfrey has struggled to obtain regular game time since joining Everton, prompting speculation of a departure in January.
Interestingly, during an interview with Everton‘s official website in 2021, Godfrey highlighted how Farke’s counsel may have influenced the course of his career. He stated: “(Farke told me) ‘You will be a terrific midfielder but a top centre-back’. I believed his view and haven’t argued with it so far…he mentioned my pace, aggressiveness, and playing out of the back.”
Godfrey continued, “People were asking me to be patient when I wasn’t playing, which is easier said than done. It is really difficult when you are not expecting to play, but you must persevere in order to be prepared for your opportunity.
“When my opportunity arose, I seized it and never looked back. I did not break through and relax. Football is a dog-eat-dog industry, and someone is always looking to take your spot. I didn’t want to sit on that bench again; I knew how it felt. I kept working and made sure I stayed with that team.”
Godfrey was apparently due to join Serie A club Atalanta this month, but that deal appears to be off the table, potentially opening the door to Leeds. However, it is uncertain whether Everton will agree to an initial loan agreement after reportedly almost selling the defender for up to £15 million.
