Tottenham Hotspur player Rodrigo Bentancur apologised to teammate Son Heung-min yesterday after a video of him stating all South Koreans “look the same” went viral online.
In a recent social media post from Uruguayan Television’s Por La Camiseta, host Rafa Cotelo asks the Uruguay international for a Spurs player’s shirt, to which Bentancur responds, “Sonny’s?”, adding, “It could be Sonny’s cousin too because they all look the same.”
Bentancur apologised when his remarks were met with criticism.
“Sonny, brother!” I apologise to you for what happened; it was simply a really terrible joke,” the 26-year-old posted on his Instagram stories on Friday.
“You know I love you, and I would never insult or harm you or anybody else! “I love you, brother!”
Uruguay is in Group C with the United States, Panama, and Bolivia in the Copa America, which will run from Thursday until July 14 in the US. South Korea has advanced to the third round of Asia‘s 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which begin on June 27. — Reuters
