Blackburn Rovers manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has said that his team must improve their defence in order to “win games” against Coventry City on Wednesday night.

Rovers have already surrendered a Championship-high 20 goals this season. Only Southampton has surrendered as many, with 15 of those coming in the last five games. Their most recent collapse saw them lose 4-1 at home to Leicester City, after conceding four at Ipswich and three more at Ewood Park against Sunderland in a run of three straight Championship defeats.

“We gave away some poor goals, but they are learning on the job against a very good side,” Tomasson remarked after his team’s latest setback against the league leaders, which leaves the club in 18th place in the division with 10 points from their first nine games. The manager believes the goals are the consequence of individual errors rather than a systematic problem, and he admits the team, which includes former Sky Blues player Dom Hyam, is not defending well enough.

“The first one is a corner, and it’s quite simple that you have to get the first contact as a team,” said Tomasson, who will be without his first choice custodian at CBS Arena. “The second is a throw-in in the opponent’s half, in the corner, and we’re too far away from our man.” The third element is the punishment. We must improve in these areas. It’s not because we’re open or in control of the game, but because of human errors that occur in football.
