Today’s Portuguese press mentions Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion’s interest in Sporting star Pedro Gonçalves.
According to A Bola, the player is completely focused on his season with the Lions and persuading national team manager Roberto Martinez that he deserves a spot in Portugal’s Euros squad.
The newspaper then claims that Aston Villa and Brighton were interested in him during the summer transfer window and that those two clubs are still interested in him.
The issue is that Sporting reportedly considered Gonçalves ‘not negotiable’ at the time and will continue to do so in the future, as they would not let such a player leave in January. That means the winger would only leave for the amount of his release clause, which is €80 million.
In 13 appearances this season, Gonçalves has three goals and three assists. Those aren’t quite as impressive as they were in recent years, but that could be an argument for Aston Villa and Brighton to lower the asking price.
A summer move appears to be more likely than a hurried January switch.
