Billy Gilmour, a midfielder for Brighton & Hove Albion, made his Scotland debut in France on Tuesday evening.
However, despite the 22-year-old’s magnificent effort, the Tartan Army were defeated 4-1 by the FIFA World Cup runners-up in Lille.
After only 11 minutes, Gilmour handed Scotland the lead. The former Rangers and Chelsea midfielder intercepted Eduardo Camavinga’s backpass and fired inside the far post.
However, a star-studded France team took only five minutes to equalise. To equalise, Benjamin Pavard headed in an Antoine Griezmann corner, before the Inter defender nodded in France‘s second.
After VAR ruled Liam Kelly fouled Olivier Giroud in the box, Paris Saint-German superstar Kylian Mbappé added a third penalty before halftime.
After Griezmann‘s close-range attempt hit the crossbar, Kingsley Coman blasted home a half-volley on the rebound on 70 minutes to complete a convincing triumph for the hosts.
Gilmour has three assists in 27 appearances in all competitions for Albion since joining from Chelsea in September 2022.
This season, the highly regarded midfielder has made ten appearances for the Seagulls and has one assist.
