Brighton’s World Cup star experienced “some level of anxiety.”

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan hopes that giving Brighton loanee Jeremy Sarmiento more minutes will help alleviate the ‘anxiety’ that has built up as a result of several injuries.

Jeremy Sarmiento

The 21-year-old joined the Championship club on a season-long loan earlier this summer, but he has struggled for playing time thus far. Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Cardiff City was only his second appearance of the season, but he made an immediate impact with a stunning solo goal from long range.

Now, manager Corberan hopes Sarmiento can thrive on the field and put his injury woes behind him. The Ecuadorian international missed a month earlier this season due to a quad issue, in addition to previous hamstring and metatarsal injuries with the Seagulls.

Jeremy is one player who is very determined to reach the pinnacle of his career,” Corberan told Birmingham Live.

“Sometimes, when you’re young and have been suffering from these injuries, it can create a level of anxiety that doesn’t help you dominate the type of game you’re going to play.”

“He’s going to this aspect to better select which type of actions he’s using, to better select whether he needs to make one-v-one, to better select the switch of play, the simplicity of the action, or if the game demands individual one-v-one like he was trying today.”

“It’s important for him to get minutes because he hasn’t had the continuity, he needs due to injuries.” We decided to give him the opportunity to play more minutes, and he has grown in the game, in my opinion.

“He took his time in the first half – he didn’t find enough space on the pitch, time on the ball, or balls in good positions.” His crosses were also not very accurate. He improved as the minutes passed because we know he’s a good player with a lot of talent who needs to keep improving.”

Sarmiento, who scored his only other goal for the Baggies against Middlesbrough earlier this season, will be hoping to be named to the starting lineup for this weekend’s home game against league leaders Leicester City.
