By acquiring a Cardiff City player who competed for Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League, York City pulls off a coup.

National League winners Cardiff City’s defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott has joined York City permanently.

The 22-year-old’s contract with Cardiff was extended just months before he signed a loan deal with the Minstermen in September.

He has left a lasting impression in North Yorkshire and is now a major player in York’s campaign to rejoin the EFL.

Now that the Bluebirds and the Minstermen have agreed on an undisclosed sum, his move is permanent. January 2 is when the agreement will become official.

“It’s good to have you with us, Malachi.” York said in a statement: “The 22-year-old has not only been a part of a strong defense, but he has also contributed at the other end of the pitch, recording three assists and a crucial goal away at FC Halifax Town that started the memorable injury-time fightback away at The Shay.

Fagan-Walcott, a center-back by trade, began his career in Tottenham Hotspur‘s youth system. He advanced into the main lineup and made his Champions League debut in March 2020 against RB Leipzig.

Spurs confirmed his release in 2023, and it turned out to be his first and last time playing for the first team. Fagan-Walcott was only given three first-team appearances by Cardiff, despite their approach.

He has also played for England at the under-16 and under-17 levels, giving him international experience.
