According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea could try to sign Tyler Adams from Leeds without paying his £20 million release clause this week.
The journalist writes on his personal Twitter account (8 August) that the London club is willing to go with a deal for the USMNT captain and that the player is receptive to the move.
Despite having a simple £20 million exit clause in his contract, Chelsea are considering negotiating an alternative payment structure with the Whites in order to complete a deal before the start of the new Premier League season this week.

“Chelsea is happy to proceed with Tyler Adams, who is open to the move,” he added.
“They must now decide whether to pay the £20 million release clause or try a different structure.”
Pay up or leave
Adams is clearly one of the top players at Elland Road right now, and while he is temporarily injured, there is no mistake about his value to the team once he is fully recovered.
The £20m clause means we have very little bargaining power if a team decides to pay up and he wants to transfer, but if people want to try to negotiate, Leeds‘ stance should be quite clear.
Anything other than the release clause should only be considered if we are promised a higher sum of money for the player – even if it means we may have to wait a little longer.
