Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea’s London rivals, just finalised the loan acquisition of their former striker Timo Werner, who has made an immediate impact.
Timo Werner made his Tottenham debut yesterday in a 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford, setting up Rodrigo Bentancur‘s equaliser.
However, journalist Simon Phillips believes the 27-year-old may have ended up back at Chelsea. “I understand that intermediaries offered him back to Chelsea,” Phillips stated on Substack, before admitting that the Blues declined the offer.
Werner departed Stamford Bridge for RB Leipzig in 2022. However, his second stay there did not go as planned, therefore he decided to join Tottenham on loan last week.
According to Sky Germany, Spurs may sign Werner permanently at the end of his loan for £15 million.
Chelsea rejects chance to re-sign Timo Werner.
Chelsea could probably use a new forward. Nicolas Jackson is now at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Christopher Nkunku is sidelined with another injury.
Even yet, the Blues undoubtedly made the right decision not to re-sign Werner.
He didn’t light up the Bundesliga this season, scoring only two goals in eight games, and the German struggled at Chelsea.
In 89 games with the club, he only scored 23 goals. With that record, you wouldn’t have expected Werner to overhaul Chelsea’s season.
Overall, Mauricio Pochettino needs another forward, but the Germany international is not the answer.
Werner will be hoping that his second term in the Premier League goes considerably better than his first. He’s off to a terrific start with that assist against United, but Ange Postecoglou will expect goals from players of his profile and skill in the future.
