Chelsea’s Gallagher has been linked with a late January move to Tottenham.
Conor Gallagher is allegedly reluctant to quit Chelsea in January despite still playing regularly at Stamford Bridge. The England midfielder has been linked with a surprise move away from the west London club, with Tottenham interested.
Spurs are allegedly considering a late bid for Gallagher in the final 48 hours of the transfer window. The departure of an academy graduate would be pure profit for Chelsea, allowing them to pay off debts.
The north Londoners attempted to sign the 23-year-old in the summer, but the move did not go through. A January chase would apparently require Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to leave Tottenham, something the midfielder’s counsel has ruled out.
Gallagher has been a regular for Chelsea this season, appearing in 28 games in all competitions. He has even been awarded captaincy while Reece James and Ben Chilwell are out due to injury.
Gallagher is reluctant to leave his boyhood club, according to the Evening Standard. Regular Chelsea matches will put him in great contention to reach the England side for Euro 2024.
It is believed that, while Chelsea would consider selling Gallagher if a price of around £45 million was made, they would prefer to move striker Armando Broja or versatile fellow academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah.
Spurs are unlikely to bid for Gallagher until they sell Hojbjerg. Lars Halgreen, the Dane’s lawyer, has stated that the midfielder has no intention of leaving Tottenham this month.
“The player never asked to leave now,” Halgreen explained. “He is tremendously ambitious for Tottenham and Denmark, and he is constantly striving to develop. His main goal is for Tottenham to finish the season strong and assist as much as possible.”
Spurs are already well-stocked in midfield, with Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr expected to return from the Africa Cup of Nations. As a result, they are unlikely to make a bid for Gallagher unless there is a huge departure.
Ange Postecoglou‘s team has been one of the busiest Premier League clubs in January. Timo Werner arrived on loan from RB Leipzig in the early days of the transfer window. Radu Dragusin, a centre-back, has since been bought for £25 million from Genoa.
Following a brief downturn in form before Christmas, Postecoglou is again welcome back crucial players. Micky van de Ven and James Maddison have recovered from hamstring and ankle injuries, respectively.
