Crysencio Summerville’s stint with West Ham United has not been a success thus far.
When Crysencio Summerville joined West Ham United from Leeds United in the summer, there was hope that he would take the Premier League by storm.
The Dutchman was crowned Championship Player of the Year last season after scoring 19 goals and assisting nine times in 43 games for Leeds. It appeared almost inevitable that he would quit after the Whites were unable to regain promotion to the top division.
Despite speculation that Summerville, 23, might continue at Elland Road, he left in August to join West Ham for a sum of just more over £25 million with add-ons. He made his debut on the first day of the season as a second-half substitute in a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa.
Unfortunately for Summerville, he has struggled to get regular playing time at the London Stadium. In reality, since joining the Hammers, the former Netherlands Under-21 international has started only six Premier League games and appeared 12 times from the bench.
Summerville has scored only one goal for West Ham. This occurred, strangely, during a 2-1 victory against Leeds’ fierce rivals Manchester United in October. He has one assist to his account, setting up Niclas Fullkrug’s late consolation goal as the Hammers were defeated 3-1 at Leicester City.
Summerville’s time at West Ham has been disappointing thus far, and ex-Ajax and Borussia Dortmund winger Cedric van der Gun believes the Dutchman may be struggling physically with the transition to the Premier League this season.
“He was brought in for a considerable amount, but that applies to several players there,” he told Viaplay. “Take Fullkrug as an example. He disappoints me even more than Summerville.
“The only thing that comes to mind when I think of Summerville is that he, too, is physically battling. The Premier League places a high physical demand on its players. So maybe he’ll gradually grow into that role.
“But in a game like today (against Liverpool), where West Ham are without a few players, you would have hoped he would start. But then Lopetegui selects others. Summerville is more of a substitute this season, but you still hope he can knock on the door a little more firmly.”
With Jarrod Bowen out and West Ham struggling at the top of the pitch, Summerville could get a rare start against Manchester City on Saturday.
