Daniel Farke delivers an injury report on Luke Ayling before of Leeds United’s match against Preston North End

Daniel Farke has confirmed that Luke Ayling missed Leeds United’s match against Ipswich Town due to injury rather than his position in the pecking order.

The experienced right back, who has been left out of a number of Leeds matchday squads this season, was nowhere to be found at Elland Road on Saturday (23 December) for the Whites‘ 4-0 win, with many speculating Farke had left him out once again.

However, the German has revealed that the 32-year-old has sustained a slight injury, but has provided a positive report on Jamie Shackleton and Sam Byram, implying that both players are ahead of schedule and on their way back.

According to Leeds Live (December 24), he stated, “Luke, unfortunately, had no chance because he had some knee problems.” That’s why he wasn’t on the team. I’m hoping he’ll be able to return shortly.

“Perhaps the same with Sam Byram.” Rehab appears to be going well, so I’m hoping he’ll be able to return sooner rather than later. We’ll see what happens in the next days.

“With Jamie Shackleton, I hope also the same, that he can be a topic in the next games and I hope Jaidon Anthony will be back pretty soon.”

Luke Ayling has nearly been a non-factor at Elland Road this season, with Shackleton, Archie Gray, and Djed Spence all selected ahead of the 32-year-old at right-back at various periods.

However, with his expertise and knowledge, Ayling is a wonderful choice for the Whites to have at their disposal, and he provides a large and essential presence in the changing room. Leeds United will be hoping he returns soon so that they have the option of picking him.

He has already struggled with a knee injury this season, so the Whites will be concerned that he has been ruled out for similar reasons. His contract expires at the conclusion of the season, and he may need to be fit to stay at Elland Road.

On a more positive note, Farke and his team will benefit greatly from the return of Byram and Shackleton in the new year. Both players have impressed thus far this season and might play significant roles between now and the end of the season.
