Leeds United travel to Birmingham for their second Championship match this weekend, with Illan Meslier expecting to keep his starting spot in goal.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke has a lot of decisions to make over his starting lineup for tomorrow’s trip to St Andrew’s.
The Whites head to the Second City with an injury-plagued squad to play another club with one point in the Championship, John Eustace‘s Birmingham City.
Will Illan Meslier make his debut?
After signing Karl Darlow from Newcastle United this summer, the discussion over who will be Leeds‘ long-term starter in goal this season continues.
Darlow began in goal against Shrewsbury and was steady between the posts, unable to save a deflected attempt from giving the visitors the lead.
Despite making his debut for the club, it appears that Farke still considers Frenchman Illan Meslier to be his first choice custodian, according to Phil Hay:
Is it possible that Meslier will stay?
At the moment, it appears that the custodian position is the only one in which Leeds can consider themselves properly covered for the upcoming season.
Meslier contributed to the conjecture early in the summer, commenting on the perfect solution for him for next season, maybe transferring to a club where he can play frequently – rather than someone like Chelsea, he told RMC Sport.
Farke now appears to be planning to keep the 23-year-old, with a paucity of interest in his signature appearing in recent weeks.
Who should go first in goal?
If we can restore Meslier’s confidence and form to their previous levels, we’ll be back in business with the Frenchman.
He didn’t help himself with those statements earlier this summer following a disastrous season finale, but he needs faith if he’s going to stay.
Farke‘s setup is likely to get more out of him than we did in the Premier League, knowing he’ll have more protection as well as more freedom to play out.
Darlow, on the other hand, is an excellent backup right now.
