Daniel Farke may have hinted to a double Leeds United deal.

Daniel Farke’s words following Leeds United’s 3-2 win against Norwich may have given senior players Luke Ayling and Liam Cooper renewed hope.

Farke talked highly of the pair, not only for their influence on the pitch but also behind the scenes, in a demonstration of faith and how highly the manager regards his senior squad players.

According to Phil Hay of The Athletic [16 October], Farke will make the final decision on whether or not the club renews the contracts of the two players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the year.

“If I could choose a player [to have at the club], I would go for Luke Ayling and Liam Cooper,” the manager said after the game. “They are already club legends because of what they have done.”

“To accept ‘OK, we’re back in the Championship,’ and to have to wait 90 minutes just to come in for the final minutes, but still be on it and help the players.”

“Liam, before the game, he was sitting next to Pascal Struijk, explaining ‘You have to defend this way and that way,’ and they both studied the opposing strikers.”

Luke, unbelievable leadership, so really I love my whole group and I’m always tempted to play them all, but sadly you have to disappoint more or less two-thirds of the squad each and every game.” [Leeds Live, October 21]

These words will have come as a nice lift to both players, with Farke’s trust and belief in them likely to drive better performances, but the recognition of their work and leadership off the pitch could be key in their continued bids for new contracts.

According to The Athletic, Farke will evaluate the pair both on and off the pitch, taking into account everything they can offer the club, before making a final decision on whether their futures remain at Elland Road beyond the conclusion of this season.

The way the manager speaks about both players could be an indication of how important he believes they are to his team, and if they can duplicate their off-field antics that have garnered them such high acclaim when they do step foot on the pitch, they could surely make a strong case.

It’s a tough decision for the boss to make, but he’ll know what his team needs and what the future holds for the trio. Their personal performances in the coming months will be crucial in convincing Farke that they deserve their place at Elland Road.
