Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville scored his 18th goal of the season as the Whites defeated Hull City to recover second place in the Championship last night.
After drawing 2-2 with Watford on Good Friday, the Whites’ Easter season threatened to be another cursed instalment in Spring, with a disappointing performance at Vicarage Road and appearing second best for extended periods against Hull City on Monday night.
Leeds 3-1 Hull: Summerville displays incredible bottle to strike winner.
On nine minutes, Sam Byram headed Leeds into the lead with a mix of his nose and teeth, attempting to put the home side back on track following a shaky performance earlier in Easter.
However, the Tigers rallied admirably to the setback and were rewarded when Fabio Carvalho converted a brilliant Tyler Morton cross for 1-1 as the game entered halftime.
Joel Piroe came up to take over after Junior Firpo did his part in keeping the ball and preventing any mind games, only for Summerville to steal the responsibility from his fellow countryman, making no mistake in sitting Ryan Allsop down and netting a winner for Leeds.
Dan James made sure deep into additional time when he broke forward and scored from 50 yards on the touchline, leaving Allsop isolated after tracking back from the initial set-piece.
Joel Piroe is upset with Summerville, and Farke confesses he broke rank.
According to Nancy Froston of The Athletic, Daniel Farke stated after the game that Summerville defied the club’s penalty-taking order to score.
Piroe was on the pitch and the designated spot-kick taker, which the Dutchman made sure didn’t matter too much in the end.
“Striker Piroe, Farke confessed later, was the selected penalty-taker after only coming on as a substitute, and it was he who first placed the ball on the spot.
“Piroe was just beginning to go back to mark out his run-up when Summerville, Leeds‘ designated taker in the starting XI, stepped up and grabbed up the ball, touching his chest to show he was pulling rank.
“A heated conversation ensued, before captain Ampadu, assisted by Junior Firpo, persuaded Piroe to step away, though he was still complaining as he stood on the edge of the penalty area waiting for Summerville to shoot.”
“The fall-out had he missed could have been toxic, but, having decided he was the man to shape the narrative, Summerville proved up to the task, rolling his kick into the net as Ryan Allsop dived the other way before ripping off his shirt and charging to the left corner flag amazingly.”
