Daniel Farke speaks on Charlie Cresswell’s transfer

Leeds United’s manager has declared that Charlie Cresswell’s future with the club is in his hands.

Charlie Cresswell may have expected more playing time for Leeds United this season than he has received under Daniel Farke, who believes it is up to him if he stays in West Yorkshire this month.

He spent last season on loan with fellow Championship club Millwall, where he played regularly under Gary Rowett in 30 appearances at The Den, however his season was cut short after fracturing his eye socket late in the season.

Following his development with the Lions, the 21-year-old may have expected more opportunities with Leeds this season after the club was relegated to the Championship, but he has struggled to break into Farke‘s plans consistently, and was once again left out of the matchday squad against Birmingham City on Monday.

In August, he signed a new contract that will keep him at Elland Road until 2027. He was also given the number-five shirt number for the season, which might be interpreted as a statement of purpose regarding his involvement.

So far, his season hasn’t gone as planned, with him starting just one Championship game and two EFL Cup matches for Leeds. Cresswell’s last appearance came in the 101st minute of QPR‘s 1-0 triumph on October 4th.

The centre-back has also taken some compassionate leave due to a personal issue, but he has only been named as a substitute three times in recent months, failing to come off the bench in either game against Bristol City or Plymouth Argyle, and was also an unused substitute against West Brom.

Despite Pascal Struijk‘s recent absence due to an adductor problem, Farke has asked Liam Cooper to join Joe Rodon, as was the case against Birmingham, although Cresswell has been left out entirely.

Farke indicated that Ian Poveda was brought back onto the bench for creative purposes, but Cresswell has the option to stay if he so desires in his post-match press conference. Farke added, via Phil Hay, “Charlie is a proud player.” It is entirely up to him whether or not he accepts this challenge.”

Cresswell have been connected with Middlesbrough, according to The Sun, who believe that Michael Carrick has set his sights on Cresswell ahead of the January transfer window.

However, the list of bidders has extended in recent months, with Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town all connected with a move for Cresswell, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Regular playing time and senior minutes are essential at his age, which he is not currently receiving with Leeds, and a loan may be the best decision for Cresswell at this juncture of his career.
