Danny Murphy hails a double Tottenham transfer deal amid criticism over Timo Werner’s move.

Tottenham Hotspur have made their first move before the summer transfer window opens.

Timo Werner has returned to the club following a six-month loan stay, but the forward’s new loan arrangement has sparked criticism.

Danny Murphy, a pundit, was confused by Tottenham’s decision to sign the player based on his performance in the previous season.

The 28-year-old struggled at Chelsea during his first term in the Premier League before scoring twice on his return.

Some critics have questioned Spurs’ decision, with Ange Postecoglou clearly getting his way and Daniel Levy backing him up.

Murphy was quick to point out that, while Werner will not lead the London club into the Champions League next season, the team has made ‘a couple of excellent additions’, as he told talkSPORT.

Last summer, Postecoglou was widely favoured, and several of his new faces proved to be vital contributors as the squad finished fifth.

Murphy was eager to give Micky van de Ven his flowers and praise him for his’sensational’ defensive performance for Tottenham.

And how left-back Destiny Udogie, who was signed in 2022 but just made his debut this season, ‘came out of nowhere’ and has likely been the finest player in his position this year.

“Let’s give it balance, they have made a couple of brilliant signings,” Murphy stated. “So, their recruitment isn’t entirely horrible.

Van de Ven has been sensational. I think he’s done exceptionally well. Udogie. He has undoubtedly been the best left back in the country. He appeared out of nowhere. Someone is doing the correct thing there.

“You will have the odd one that is a more rational safe squad bet. Tottenham’s communication style, manager, and ambitions. They are not going to sign Werner for another season to start him. Cannot be. They won’t make the top four with the front three they had at the end of the season.

What happens next for Tottenham Hotspur in the transfer market?

It should be mentioned that Spurs did not participate in Europe this season, yet some of their performances did not justify it.

Furthermore, when players like James Maddison and van de Ven were injured, they struggled to adjust and lost a number of games.
