Deal fits: Spurs goes for £25m player who plays Johnson’s position

Tottenham Hotspur is likely to have a busy transfer window this summer as Daniel Levy and his team strive to get the appropriate players for Ange Postecoglou’s exciting project.

Last season, the Australian managed to get the team back into European football, but a collapse near the conclusion of the season meant it was in the Europa League rather than the Champions League.

To advance to the next level, the North Londoners will need to sign some quality signings in the coming months, and recent reports suggest that this may well happen.

Federico Chiesa

The latest player mentioned for a move to N17 is an immensely exciting winger who would help the team score more goals and compete with Brennan Johnson for a spot in the starting lineup.

According to a recent Caught Offside story, Tottenham are interested in signing Juventus and Italy player Federico Chiesa in the summer.

The 26-year-old’s £150,000-per-week contract expires next summer, and according to the source, the Lilywhites have matched the Old Lady’s €6 million-per-year offer, which is equivalent to almost £5 million.

However, the winger is said to seek a salary of closer to €8 million per year (£7 million), and according to sources earlier this week, it will cost North Londoners approximately £25 million to get him out of Turin a year early.

It could be a difficult trade to close, but considering Chiesa‘s talent, it is one worth pursuing, especially since he could be a tremendous opponent for Johnson.

How does Chiesa compare to Johnson?

So, if Spurs can sign Chiesa this summer, he’ll most likely come in to play off the right side of a front three, where he’s spent the majority of his career.

In that case, Johnson would be one of his primary opponents for a spot in the starting lineup, but how do they compare?

When it comes to sheer output last season, the Welshman just about edged it, scoring five goals and contributing ten assists in 38 appearances for the Lilywhites, amounting to a goal involvement every 2.53 games.

In comparison, the “unstoppable” former Fiorentina ace, as Giorgio Chiellini nicknamed him, scored ten goals and supplied three assists in 37 appearances, resulting in a significantly lower average of one goal every 2.84 games.

However, when it comes to their underlying numbers, the tables shift, and the Italian “wizard,” as termed by football media figure Roger Bennett, comes out on top.

For example, while the former Nottingham Forest ace has a higher non-penalty expected goal and assist figure, more actual assists, higher passing accuracy, and more goal-creating actions, he is comfortably second in terms of actual non-penalty goals, progressive passes and carries, shots and shots on target, key passes, and shot-creating actions per 90.

Finally, if Chiesa is available for the stated amount, Tottenham cannot afford to miss out. While he may not be as talented as Johnson, he is definitely talented and has the potential to challenge the team’s other wingers to improve, if not completely replace them in the future.
