According to Leeds United’s YouTube channel, Daniel Farke stated at Thursday’s news conference that Joe Gelhardt does not require surgery for a hand injury sustained in training, but will miss Saturday’s game.
Gelhardt, 21, suffered a hand fracture in training last week and was sent for further evaluation to determine whether he would need surgery to correct the problem. He has not played in the last three games.
This season, the youthful striker, nicknamed Joffy, has struggled for playing time, with Georginio Rutter and Joel Piroe both impressing. Patrick Bamford has returned to fitness, and Mateo Joseph is another option for Leeds.
“Joe Gelhardt overall good news, he didn’t need surgery, he will definitely miss this game,” Farke said in his latest press conference, which was streamed live on Leeds United’s YouTube account on Thursday.
Daniel Farke provides an update on Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt.
Gelhardt must be loaned out in January. So it’s wonderful news that he won’t have to go under the knife to allow the injury to heal on its own. The absence of Gelhardt has little impact on Leeds.
But, for the player, he needs to be fit ahead of the January transfer window in order to secure a loan move away from Leeds – and find himself a Championship team where he can score goals.
Gelhardt would go on his second loan away from Leeds, having spent the second half of last season at Sunderland, where he scored three goals in 20 games. A similar loan with more objectives is necessary.
