After an incredible season for Leeds United, Archie Gray was recognised as the Championship’s Young Player of the Season during Sunday’s Football League awards. His play is becoming more and more noticeable.
Gray made his debut on the first day of the season and has since appeared in 46 league and cup games for the team, both at right-back and in the middle of the park. He has made quite the impression.
European heavyweights and Premier League teams have taken notice of that form. Although he had signed fresh terms back in January, Leeds is optimistic he will sign a new contract this summer.
Archie Gray of Leeds is eligible to play for both Scotland and England.
He won’t, in spite of the rumours, be joining another English team. Gray will have to choose between representing Liam Cooper’s Scottish side and carrying on his family’s tradition.
Alternatively, he keeps going in the direction he seems to be going and, when given the opportunity, plays for England. During the most recent international break, England manager Gareth Southgate made reference to him by name.
After receiving the Young Player of the Season title, Gray answered a “very difficult” question on his future as an international player for England in a TalkSPORT interview.
What Gray stated when questioned about his future team to play for
“I wanted to pose a very challenging final question. TalkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams questioned Eddie and Frank, “With your background, are you going to play for England or Scotland?” after the two received their awards on Sunday.
“Definitely, I want to play for England. It’s my hometown and my upbringing. I am seventy-five percent English.
My grandfather and father are ecstatic. Eddie is pleased if I’m happy, yet he backs Scotland.
It’s a significant choice for Gray, but it appears that he has decided. The World Cup in 2026 seems like a likely initial objective for Gray, but Euro 2024 will come too quickly.
