England’s UEFA coefficient following Champions League victories by Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool, and Villa.

With their convincing victories in the Champions League on Tuesday and Wednesday, England’s coefficient standing increased.

UEFA Champions League

Though it’s early, it won’t be long until people are discussing the UEFA coefficient points system over drinks at the water cooler or in the pub. Due to changes made to Europe’s premier competition, Italy and Germany secured a fifth Champions League spot for their respective clubs last season. In addition to Fiorentina making it to the Conference League final, Atalanta qualified for and won the Europa League. In the meantime, Bayer Leverkusen advanced to the Europa League final and Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final. But who will be awarded the additional places this time? Based on clubs’ performance in European competition, points are awarded to their association for the two additional spots, which are determined by UEFA’s coefficient rankings.

On Tuesday and Wednesday night, all four of England’s Champions League participants emerged victorious. Liverpool defeated Bologna, Man City defeated Slovan Bratislava, Arsenal defeated PSG, and Aston Villa triumphed handily over Bayern Munich. The point scheme Wins, draws, and advancement in the European competitions award ranking points to each club, which add up to the associations’ total ranking points. And at the conclusion of the season, the two associations with the greatest average points earn the additional spots for their respective leagues.

Points are awarded as follows:

2 – All wins from group stage (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League)

1 – All wins in qualifying and play-off matches(Champions League, Europa League, Conference League)

1 – All draws from group stage (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League)

0.5 – All draws in qualifying and play-off matches (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League)

4 – Champions League group stage bonus participation

4 – Champions League Round of 16 bonus participation

4 – Europa League group winners

2 – Europa League group runners-up

2 – Conference League group winners

1 – Conference League group runners-up

1 – Each round clubs reach from the round of 16 (Champions League, Europa League)

1 – Each round clubs reach from the semi-finals (Conference League)

How to calculate the association points

Next, the total number of points is divided by the total number of teams that season that are participating in European competition. The Premier League may be in a strong position at the end of the season because it has seven clubs in Europe this season as opposed to Italy’s eight and Germany’s eight.

What position does England occupy?

With all four of their Champions League victories this week, England has accumulated a total of 18 points in European competition thus far. Thus far, that ranks as the third-best result for any nation. The average for England is 2.571 points after dividing the figure by seven, which is the amount of Premier League teams participating in Europe this season.

With that ranking, they are currently 19th out of all associations, well short of the top two needed to secure a fifth Champions League spot. Currently atop with an average of 5.300 is Czechia. Nevertheless, England has a lot more chances to gain points than the other nations as the season progresses because only two of the nations above it in the rankings, Portugal and Belgium, still have all of their teams competing in European competition (and they only have five representatives, compared to England’s seven).
