Brighton drew 1-1 with Fulham at the Amex Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with Evan Ferguson scoring the Seagulls’ tenth Premier League goal of the season.
Evan Ferguson may be about to break Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney‘s Premier League record.
On Sunday, the Brighton striker scored his tenth league goal of 2023 against Fulham, becoming the first teenager to do so in the Premier League in a calendar year since Wayne Rooney in 2005.
Ferguson only needs two goals to break Wayne Rooney’s record of 11 goals, and he’ll be confident of doing so given Albion still has nine league matches to play in 2023.
If the Republic of Ireland forward is able to stay fit for those games and is chosen by manager Roberto De Zerbi, he should have no trouble breaking the record and may even smash it out of sight.
“Yes, not bad, not bad,” Ferguson said after learning that his goal on Sunday had tied him with Rooney. “Especially as a kid looking up to him and watching Wayne Rooney play so that’s not bad news.”
“Obviously, just seeing how young he was and seeing his documentary, how young he was and what he did at that age, it shows it’s not impossible, you know what I mean?” he continued. People believe it’s impossible, but it’s all part of the game.”
Following his hat-trick against Newcastle United in early September, the 19-year-old missed Brighton’s Carabao Cup match against Chelsea and their Europa League opener against AEK Athens, both of which ended in defeat.
Ferguson said of the period, “It was very frustrating for me, especially coming off the back of that (hat-trick).” Having a minor injury, returning, and then becoming ill, but there isn’t much you can do about it.
“The illness knocked me out for a little while, and it was just getting back on your feet and getting your lungs going again.” I just woke up one morning not feeling well, and I had it for a few days, nearly a week. But everything is fine now.”
