Fabrizio Romano believes Liverpool had considering appointing a 39-year-old manager after Xabi Alonso blow.

Xabi Alonso is no longer a possibility to be Liverpool’s next manager.

The Reds have been extensively linked with an attempt to appoint the Spaniard since Jurgen Klopp announced his departure from the club in the summer.

Alonso, who has performed admirably at Bayer Leverkusen this season, was practically every Liverpool fan’s top choice to succeed Klopp. He was clearly the number one objective.

However, according to claims published overnight, he will almost certainly not be joining Liverpool at the conclusion of the season.

It’s no surprise that Alonso has admirers not only at Liverpool, but also at Bayern Munich, who want him to be their new manager.

However, as things stand, it appears that Alonso will remain with Bayer Leverkusen for at least one more season, forcing Liverpool to explore elsewhere.

Instead, they have undertaken internal discussions regarding Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim succeeding Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’s next manager. The 39-year-old is not the only one on the list.

Romano tweeted: “Liverpool will no longer wait for Xabi Alonso – Ruben Amorim is already being discussed internally and will not be the only alternative.

“Bayern are prepared to wait until Xabi make official decision. But he’s expected to stay at Leverkusen until June 2025… with release clause.”
