Daniel Farke makes Joel Piroe decision as Leeds United confirms starting XI vs Norwich City.
Leeds United have named their starting lineup for Wednesday’s Championship game against Norwich City at Elland Road.
The Whites come into their Championship meeting off the back of a late 2-1 victory over Preston North End thanks to Joel Piroe‘s 94th-minute penalty, and a win may reduce the gap between them and the automatic promotion place to two points.
And Daniel Farke has kept the same starting lineup as the one that won on Sunday, with £12 million Preston match-winner Piroe remaining on the bench and Patrick Bamford preferred up front for the fourth game in a succession.
Willy Gnonto is not in the 20-man squad, which is surprising given that Farke said in his press conference on Tuesday (23 January) that he would be available for selection.
Huge opportunity.
The Whites were fortunate to score a last-ditch winner against Preston on Sunday, but any victory in this arduous Championship playoff/promotion battle is critical.
Many Whites fans will have been gnawing their nails in the last minutes leading up to Piroe’s penalty, but it was critical that Leeds won, even if their overall performance did not justify it.
Farke and his players now have the opportunity to make it 15 home games unbeaten at Elland Road if they avoid loss against a resurgent Norwich City side, and it’s not surprising that the German will stay with a similar XI.
A win over the Canaries will be equally as important as Sunday’s success, given David Wagner’s team’s revival and pursuit of a playoff spot.
It will be an exciting tactical clash between two compatriots who know each other well, and Farke must guarantee that his squad leaves Elland Road with three points.
Another big game for Leeds United, but more importantly, a big chance to cut the gap on the automatic promotion spot.
