Following Preston’s defeat, a BBC expert was unimpressed with Leeds’ summer signing

After Leeds United were defeated by Preston North End on Boxing Day, Jon Newsome slammed Karl Darlow.

Karl Darlow did not anticipate making his league debut for Daniel Farke’s side on Tuesday. Following his summer arrival from Newcastle United, the 33-year-old has been an unused substitute throughout the season.

Unfortunately, picking the ball out of the net was one of his first actions. Preston scored just a few minutes after Illan Meslier was sent off early in the second half.

Karl Darlow should have done better in Preston’s triumph over Leeds.

And the home team would triumph deservedly late on. Liam Millar out-muscled Archie Gray before curling a shot into the far side of the net.

Preston delivered an outstanding finale. However, Darlow was a terrible choice for the winner, according to Newsome on BBC Radio Leeds.

“It’s not in the top drawers.” From what I can see, it’s about midway up the middle of the net. And I believe the goalie could perform better,” he remarked.

“Absolutely, yeah.” Based on what I’ve seen. He doesn’t move his feet and hence fails to reach his aim. By any stretch of the imagination, it is not in the top corner. I’m not trying to take anything away from the goalscorer. But I think it’s a goal that, from a defensive standpoint, is quite upsetting to concede.”

Summer signing now receives the chance he’s been looking for.

The good news for Darlow is that he will most likely be given the opportunity to push ahead of Meslier in the pecking order.

Meslier has made some crucial saves this season, including spectacular stops against Leicester City and Sunderland.

According to Who scored, he missed 12 passes in the 4-0 win over Ipswich. And, with Leeds fourth in the table, he has not been especially active this season. So it’s difficult to get carried away with his physique.

Darlow should have very little to do while Meslier is suspended. He will, however, be conscious that he will not have a better opportunity to take the top spot at Elland Road.
