Former Premier League referee Chris Foy believes it was correct to dismiss Lewis Dunk in Brighton’s 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
The Albion captain was initially booked for encroaching while referee Anthony Taylor checked the VAR monitor to confirm Callum Hudson-Odoi’s penalty claim after collapsing under Jack Hinshelwood‘s contact.
Following the official’s decision to award Forest a penalty kick, the centre-back was shown a red card for foul and abusive language.
Dunk “crossed the line” at City Ground, according to Foy, who was a top-flight referee from 2001 to 2015.
“Following a VAR review, Lewis Dunk received a yellow card for dissent and then a straight red for foul and abusive language,” he told the Daily Mail. No match official should be subjected to that, and Anthony Taylor made the correct decision. Officials understand that players can get frustrated, but Dunk went too far on this occasion.”
According to the Mail, the England international was given a straight red rather than a second yellow card because his language to the referee was personal. According to the report, the 32-year-old will now serve a three-game suspension rather than just one.
Dunk will miss Brighton’s next three Premier League games against Chelsea, Brentford, and Burnley. He will, however, be available for Thursday’s Europa League match against AEK Athens because this does not apply to UEFA tournaments.
