Gareth Southgate is delighted by the’very composed’ £19 million midfielder Tottenham are considering signing.

England manager Gareth Southgate has singled out a player whom Tottenham Hotspur are contemplating signing for praise.

Spurs could have one star in the England team for the Euros this summer, with James Maddison hoping to impress Gareth Southgate next week.

Maddison has struggled since recovering from an ankle injury in January, but he made Southgate’s provisional 33-man group last week.

It’s fair to say that the England manager surprised some with his pick, as Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford did not make the cut.

Adam Wharton, a former Crystal Palace player, will be recognisable to Tottenham fans. The midfielder was on Spurs’ radar before completing a £19 million move to Selhurst Park in January.

TBR Football revealed earlier this month that Tottenham are still keeping an eye on Wharton’s progress following his move to Palace.

And, following Wharton’s well-deserved call-up to the England squad ahead of the Euros, Southgate has spoken about his effect in the Premier League.

Southgate is delighted with Tottenham target Adam Wharton.

Southgate praised Wharton in a press conference ahead of England’s friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland next week.

Adam Wharton, transfer in the middle of the season,” stated the Three Lions manager. “He took to life in the Premier League really well.

“Very composed with the ball, Palace closed the season nicely, and everything came together for that set of players and coach at the right time.

“He has only just got into our under-21 group but we have seen enough to suggest he’s a player we would like to see more of and find out a bit more about.”

Spurs missed a trick with Wharton.

Spurs were extensively linked with a move for the 20-year-old before his move to Palace, but they never confirmed their interest.

He has since piqued the interest of Oliver Glasner, and Palace are expected to seek a considerably bigger amount than the £19 million they paid to sign him if he moves on.

For the time being, it appears like Spurs will have to look elsewhere to bolster Postecoglou’s midfield options.

While Wharton would be a difficult transfer to complete this summer, they are interested in Hayden Hackney, another quality midfielder who flourished in the Championship with Middlesborough.
