Gary Neville feels Manchester United will struggle to finish in the top four this season, claiming they “don’t deserve to” following their dismal performance against Brentford.

Erik ten Hag‘s side were outplayed for much of Saturday’s 1-1 draw in West London, despite facing 34 shots against a team without a win since February. Tottenham and Aston Villa both won, putting United eight points behind fifth place and 11 behind fourth.

And Manchester United legend Neville was forthright in his assessment of their performance against the Bees. Despite the fact that fifth place is likely enough to qualify for Champions League football, he believes they will struggle to get there this season.

“It’s actually extremely impossible to play that poorly. Typically, whatever team you play against, even if you are a top squad, the opposing team will have five or ten minutes of dominance.

“I can’t remember a single point in the game when Manchester United performed well. “That was a terrible performance.”

United will play travel to Chelsea on Thursday evening. Ten Hag’s team will then face current Premier League leaders and fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
