Graham Smyth has revealed that Leeds United star Willy Gnonto complained to referee John Busby after Preston star Ben Whiteman was not given a yellow card for a challenge in their encounter on Saturday.
The midfielder chose to sink his studs into Jayden Bogle‘s ankle, and despite already having a yellow card, he was not penalized for his challenge on the defender.
Following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Deepdale, the Whites shared the points with Paul Heckingbottom‘s side.
“Gnonto complaining to referee John Busby at half-time about Ben Whiteman’s lack of a yellow card in the first half and being sent away by the official,” Smyth wrote for the Yorkshire Evening Posts website (15 December).
Leeds United were robbed at Deepdale during their Championship clash.
Leeds dropped points in the Championship once more, this time due to a variety of issues that occurred against Preston.
The Whites are expected to challenge for the crown, and while they are currently second in the league, their margin over league leaders Sheffield United has grown to three, making their task slightly more difficult.
However, if Busby had made the correct decision and sent Whiteman out for his challenge on Bogle, things would have been very different, with Leeds undoubtedly taking advantage of their extra man.
On paper, West Yorkshire are a far superior team, but it appears that they have slipped in recent weeks, having only won three of their previous five second-tier matches.
Of course, winning three is a respectable accomplishment, but for a club of Leeds‘ caliber, it feels like they should have easily defeated Preston.
Only time will tell how these two dropped points affect the title battle, but if Farke’s players continue to slip up, they may end the season with a red face.
