Harry Kane has been dealt yet another Bayern Munich blow during his first season at the club following a transfer from Tottenham. In search of trophies, Kane headed out to Germany for a new challenge but he has endured a nightmare season despite continuing to hit incredible heights it on a personal level.
In Saturday’s league clash away to FC Heidenheim, Kane bagged goal number 38 of the season in all competitions but once again it was in vein. Despite leading two-nil at the break, Bayern surrendered their lead in just two minutes with the hosts netting the winner in the final 15 minutes.
Prior to the surprise defeat, Bayern were already 13 points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen with that tally increasing to 16 following the latter’s win against Union Berlin. That means Xabi Alonso’s side can wrap up the league title next weekend, in between Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final fixtures against Arsenal.
Kane will return to north London, but not to the side where he is beloved, on Tuesday evening with Bayern travelling to Emirates Stadium for a Champions League quarter-final. The Gunners knocking out the former Tottenham star’s current team would certainly be the final nail in the coffin of an abysmal season by Bayern’s standards and certainly Kane’s worst nightmare.
Following the shock defeat on Saturday, Kane looked bewildered by what he had witnessed with his monotone expression a telling one. Perhaps it is all now hitting home the magnitude of his decision to leave Tottenham as his boyhood club and tarnish his legacy, at least to some, in search of glory.
With Ange Postecoglou at the helm, Spurs finally have an attack-minded manager and Kane would have undoubtedly succeeded under the Australian. Instead Son Heung-min has become Spurs’ talisman with the captain’s armband adding more responsibility to his game.
Kane could still win the Champions League this season, however Bayern’s inconsistent form and Arsenal’s solidity could mean their European adventure ends soon. However, if they do bypass Arsenal, Bayern would take on Manchester City or Real Madrid in the semi-final.
